10 Tips to Get Moving Inside During Your Homeschooling Day

One of the best things about being a work-at-home mom is that I get to homeschool. Unfortunately, because I am also a social media manager/consultant for 3 major brands and a web designer with an ever-growing list of clients, I spend a lot of time in front of the computer. I am making a conscious effort to make sure that The Tornado and I get moving more and I wanted to share some of my tips with you.

The most obvious choice was to sign her up for the local sports league. She will be playing soccer this year. Last year she took Sport Skills and Gymnastics at the Little Gym, and this year she is taking Dance. But I wanted to include other activities too – stuff that we coud do together when heading out was just not a possibility:

So here a few ways that I came up with:

Inside (for when the weather is just not friendly or if you can’t go outside for some other reason)

  1. Morning stretches and dance– we use a kids fitness CD to stretch and get moving in the morning.  It’s an instructional CD with songs that lead the exercises. While I do not recommend this particular CD as the owner of the company is rude, I do recommend the Phys-Ed CD from The Learning Station.
  2. Scavenger Hunts: create a list of various objects and search for them. Spread them out and make sure that locating the items requires bending and stretching.
  3. DANCING– really, just turn on some music and shake your booty.
  4. Count the Stairs: we live in a three floor walk up and climbing the stairs is a work out. Count the stairs and go up and down. Figure out how many trips up the stairs would make a mile…etc.
  5. Housework– here’s a reason to clean; it actually burns calories. Take a box and fill it with things to give away or put away. Do that every 2 hours.
  6. Nintendo Wii- the motion-interactive exercise programs and games make it so much fun to get moving. I love EA Active, EA Sports, Dance Dance Revolution, My Fitness Coach, Michael Jackson The Experience, Zumba fitness, and Wii Sports.
  7. Hop Skip Jump: Toss bean bags on the floor spreading them out from one room to the next. Hop, skip, or jump from one bean bag to another stopping to pick them up along the way.
  8. Beanbag in a box: toss bean bags in a box increasing the distance between you/child and box. Practice tossing both overhand and under-hand.
  9. Alphabet Hop: write each letter of the alphabet on index cards and spread them out on the floor. Say the phonetic sound of a letter and have your child hop to that letter. Take turns.
  10. PLAY– we love foam swords and playing tag, etc. We do this a bit and end p running from room to room for about 45 minutes.

  1. We recently acquired a trampoline and we love jumping on it. It’s a really good workout. I intend to use the workouts at the back of Everyday Paleo as a jumping off point for their fitness routines. Those workouts are pretty much how I workout and so it will be fun to include them. Also, we practice yoga together. I have a couple of yoga DVDs specifically for kids but generally, they just do what I’m doing.
